Leipzig, October 14, 2009 - VITA 34 International AG (ISIN DE000A0BL849),
the parent company of the leading umbilical cord blood bank in the
German-speaking countries VITA 34 AG, recorded the highest number of
storages in the history of the company in Q3 2009 and is now well in the
black after nine months. Q3 2009 saw 2,980 units being stored, slightly
beating the record figure of 2,976 in the same quarter in 2008. As the
company's cost position was reduced considerably in the past months as part
of a drive to optimise processes, VITA 34 is now reporting a profit of EUR
0.4 million for Q3 2009. This follows a loss of EUR 0.5 million in Q3 2008.
Earnings before interest and taxes, EBIT, amounted to EUR 0.2 million after
minus 0.6 million in the same quarter one year earlier. Year-on-year
revenues remained almost unchanged at EUR 4.1 million.
In the first nine months of 2009, VITA 34 generated a profit of EUR 0.4
million, after recording a planned loss of EUR 1.1 million in the previous
year. EBIT improved to EUR 0.1 million after minus EUR 1.7 million in the
first three quarters of 2008. This means that in full-year terms VITA 34
has returned into the black sooner than originally anticipated, as a
breakeven is expected at EBIT level by the end of the year. Revenues added
up to EUR 11.1 million, which means that the nine month figure is very much
in line with the EUR 11.3 million reported for the first three quarters of
2008. The number of storages amounted to 8,105 compared to 8,282 in the
previous year's period.
In addition to that VITA 34 has received the first storages from Italy.
This market accounts for around 500,000 births every year and has been
addressed by our Italian cooperation partner since Q3 2009. In addition to
Germany, VITA 34 is operating in Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Slovenia and
Italy. The incremental expansion of international business is to be
continued in the future.
